Hollow Glass Microspheres

Tiny Spheres, Big Impact:

Imagine crafting vehicles that travel farther on less fuel, or deep-sea pipelines with superior insulation. These microscopic marvels are exactly what they sound like – tiny, hollow spheres made from high-strength, low-density glass. But don't underestimate their size. 3M's microspheres are crafted from robust soda-lime borosilicate glass, making them remarkably strong and resilient. Despite their thin walls, they can withstand significant pressure, a property crucial for various applications.

  • Enhanced Efficiency: Lighter vehicles require less fuel, leading to improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions.
  • Superior Insulation: By creating microscopic air pockets, the spheres act as thermal insulators, keeping things cooler in hot environments and warmer in cold ones. This is valuable for applications ranging from construction materials to deep-sea pipelines.
  • Improved Buoyancy: The low density of the spheres makes them ideal for creating buoyant materials. They find use in marine applications like floats, buoys, and even drill riser buoyancy modules.
  • Reinforced Strength: Despite their lightweight nature, the spheres contribute to a material's strength. This is because they create a reinforcing effect within the composite structure.
  • Chemical Resistance: The glass composition makes them resistant to degradation from chemicals and water, ensuring long-lasting performance.
  • Transportation: Lightweighting vehicles translates to increased fuel efficiency and longer travel distances.
  • Construction: They improve the thermal insulation properties of building materials, enhancing energy efficiency.
  • Oil & Gas: Their buoyancy makes them ideal for deep-sea operations, while their strength contributes to drill pipe integrity.
  • Marine Industry: From boat hulls to buoys, these spheres contribute to buoyancy and insulation in marine applications.
  • Aerospace: Weight reduction is paramount in aerospace, and these microspheres help achieve it.

3M™ Glass Bubbles K15 are hollow glass spheres with a typical density of 0.15 g/cc and isostatic crush strength of 300 psi. These spheres are designed for use in a variety of oil and gas applications including drill riser buoyancy modules, buoys and moorings. Our K15 bubbles produce strong, stable voids with low thermal conductivity, helping coatings achieve the necessary compressive strength.
K15 glass bubbles are water and oil resistant, providing better utility in underwater oil and gas applications. Additionally, they are non-combustible and non-porous, so they do not absorb resin; and their low alkalinity makes this product compatible with most resins while providing a stable viscosity and a long shelf life.
3M glass bubbles are a superior alternative to many conventional fillers and additives such as silicas, calcium carbonate, talc, clay and other materials used in demanding applications. Our low-density spheres are used in a wide range of industries to reduce part weight, lower costs and enhance product properties – making them more reliable and affordable.
The benefits don’t end there; although these hollow spheres have thin walls, they have an isostatic crush strength of 300 psi, making them suitable for a number of buoyancy applications, including additives in buoys and moorings. K15 bubbles have a fractional survival rate of 80% or more, at 300 psi for consistent performance.

3M™ Glass Bubbles iM30K will change the way you think about plastic parts. This product has a density of 0.60 g/cc and an excellent isostatic crush strength of 27,000 psi, providing an additive with a superior strength-to-density ratio for use in injection molding extrusion and sheet molding compounds. They can reduce final part weight by 15% or more without compromising mechanical integrity.
From start to finish, 3M™ Glass Bubbles iM30K are about helping the production process and the quality of finished parts. Toward that end, weight reduction of 15% or more can be achieved in injection molded parts. These substantial weight reductions don’t come at the expense of quality. In fact, parts maintain strength, surface aesthetics and mechanical integrity with the use of 3M glass bubbles iM30K.
Reduce cycle time by 15-25% or more without compromising critical mechanical properties of finished parts. The secret? Faster cooling. Typically, cooling takes up most of a mold cycle. By using glass bubbles to reduce thermal mass, parts cool faster from the melt and cycle times can be considerably shortened. Fillers like talc and calcium carbonate may cost less but can actually increase part weight. Glass bubbles allow customers to make more parts per minute, per hour, per day and per year.

  • Class A sheet molding compound
  • Automotive
  • Recreational vehicles
  • Heavy-duty trucks
